JAAA Day 7 REPORT
Veronica Campbell earned her second
medal of the Championships when she placed second in the final of the
women’s 200m, in a season’s best time of 22.34. Campbell got out to a
good start and came off the turn well but was no match for Allyson Felix
who won the event in a 2007 world leading time of 21.81. With Campbell’s
medal, at the end of the 7th day, Jamaica remains in fourth position in
the placement table with 65 points behind leaders USA, Russia and Kenya
and in 6th position in the medal table with 1 gold, 2 silver and 3
bronze.
Decathlon Men
On the first day of the decathlon
competition, Maurice Smith showed his medal potential finishing first in
the standings at the end of the first 5 events with 3591 points. Smith
moved into gold medal position in the overall standings when he threw
17.32m in the shot put – 9cm shy of his lifetime best.
4 x 100m Relay Men – Heats
Jamaica
qualified for the final of the 4 x 100m relay setting a new Jamaican
record in a world leading time of 38.02 seconds. The team of Dwight
Thomas, Steve Mullings, Nesta Carter and Asafa Powell easily won their
heat ahead of the USA in second and Japan in third.
200m Women – Final
Veronica Campbell is the first Jamaican
athlete of the 2007 championships to win two medals as she earned a
silver medal in the women’s 200m. Aleen Bailey performed creditably
grabbing 6th position behind USA’s Sanya Richards (5th) in a time of
22.72.
110m Hurdles Men – Final
Maurice Wignall place eighth in the
final of the men’s 110m hurdles final after hitting the eighth and ninth
hurdles. Wignall clocked 13.39 seconds in the event that was won by
World Record Holder Xiang Lu of China in 12.95 seconds.
