ASAFA POWELL

Asafa Powell's 100m world record run of 9.74 was recognised by the IAAF as the Best Performance by a male athlete in the year 2007. This was announced at the IAAF World Athletics' Gala held at the Salle des Etoiles of the Sporting Club d'eté, in Monte-Carlo on Sunday, November 25.

Powell achieved the feat on September 9 in Rieti, Italy, two weeks after the World Championships where he won a bronze medal.

The world record run, which erased his previous best, the then world record of 9.77 seconds, made him the first man to run under 9.8 seconds on five separate occasions. Powell produced five of the top seven times in the world in 2007 and six out of the top ten.

Powell, who was undefeated in the 100 metres in 2006, was awarded the Athlete of the Year for that year.
