A 'bolt' of Lightening struck in New York City last night when Usain Bolt flashed to a world record run in the men's 100m at the Reebok Grand Prix. The lanky 6ft 3", who started the season with the 100m as speed work-out preparations, struck 200 hundredths of a second off compatriot Asafa Powell's previous mark of 9.74. Bolt, who now has two of the three fastest times ever, 9.72 and 9.76, defeated American Tyson Gay, who finished second in 9.85 seconds, in their long anticipated battle.

Bolt, who was well-aware of the Jamaican support in advance, said he just wanted to give them something special. "Just coming here, knowing a lot of Jamaicans were here giving me their support, it meant a lot," Bolt said. "I just wanted to give them what they wanted," added Bolt, who also holds the World Junior 200m record of 19.93 seconds. There were shouts of jubilation in Bolt's hometown of Sherwood Content last night when the achievement of their hero became known. Meanwhile, in the in the women's 100 meters, Veronica Campbell recorded a world leading 10.91 seconds. "I'm running good," Campbell-Brown said. "My object is to run faster than I did last year. I accomplished that and I'm happy"
