JAMAICANS PERFORM WELL AT PREFONTAINE

Joint world record holders Asafa Powell and Justin Gatlin overcame chilly, damp conditions to win their 100-metre races in 9.93 and 9.88 respectively at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon on Sunday, May 28.

The times were impressive considering the conditions, 61 degrees F (16 C) on a track soaked by earlier rain.

Gatlin and Powell ran in separate races because Gatlin didn't want to go against Powell so quickly after his world record run in Doha, Qatar, on May 12.

A possible match race between the pair in Gateshead, England, on June 11 fell through.

There is no scheduled race between the two this season, but there will be such a race, Gatlin assured reporters.

"I think that's what the world wants to see, but the world needs to be more patient," he said, "and it will be the best race they ever see."

Powell, who appeared to ease up at the end, said he's ready.

"Everyone can see that both of us are healthy, so why not?" Powell said.

He said he would have rather been in the same race with Gatlin yesterday.

"It has people thinking 'Who is the best out there'?" Powell said.

There are rumblings of a possible showdown in Athens, where Powell broke the world record last year.

Maria Mutola of Mozambique won the Prefontaine 800m for the 14th consecutive time, outsprinting Kenia Sinclair of Jamaica and American Hazel Clark to win in 1:58.86. Sinclair was second at 1:59.00, a 10th of a second ahead of Clark.
