ADIDAS CLASSIC - LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

Jamaican Olympic Champion, Veronica Campbell, won the 100m in a world leading time of 10.99 on Sunday, May 21 at the Adidas Classic. Campbell outran 2005 US champion Lisa Barber who was second in 11:06. Campbell was in full control of the race and showed signs of being the number one sprinter in 2006.

Kenia Sinclair in her quest to be the best in her event, showed that she can be stronger in the future. Sinclair was second in the 1500m in a time of 4:08:89. A few more 1500m runs will definitely be a plus in her preparation for the 800m in the latter part of the season.

Novlene Williams (51.33) was second in a very competitive 400m race between herself and Americans Dee Dee Trotter (51.19) and Monique Henderson (51.49). Williams ran very strong over the final 100m. Ronetta Smith was 6th in 52.66 while Shellene Williams was 9th in 53.13.

Despite running a good first half Vonetta Dixon was 7th in the women's 100m hurdles in a time of 12.80 and Lacena Golding-Clarke 8th in 12.84. The Jamaican duo was unable to hold off a very strong field led by 2005 World Champion Michelle Perry (12:61) of the USA.

Jermaine Gonzales (45.00) was second in the men's 400m to 2005 World Championships Silver Medallist and current world leader Andrew Rock (44:83) of the USA. Gonzales closed gradually on Rock down the homestretch but Rock's strength prevailed. Michael Blackwood was third in 45.22 and appears ready to run under 45.00 in the near future.

In the men's 100m Dwight Thomas was 4th in 10.11, his best time so far in 2006. Running so fast at this time of the year is a sign of his predicted sub 10.00 before the end of the season.

Danny McFarlane was able to grab 4th in a very competitive 400m hurdles race. It will take McFarlane a few more races during the season to be back in top form.

Omar Brown (20.33) was third to American and world leader Wallace Spearman (20.06) and Jeremy Warner (20.19) Olympic and World Champion 400m runner. Brown's performances so far this year show signs of a possible low 20 seconds before the end of the season.
