Jamaica's
reigning Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell will miss this year's
National Track & Field Championships with a torn muscle.
Campbell, the reigning
World Championships 100m silver medallist, suffered a torn muscle in her
left quad at Sunday's (June 11) Norwich Union British Grand Prix in
Gateshead, possibly knocking the 24-year-old out for the rest of the
season.
The unfortunate incident
happened when she entered the home stretch of the 200 meters. She showed
discomfort as she came off the turn.
Shortly after, she fell
to the ground some 80 meters from the finish line.
She was later taken off
the track in pain.
Campbell's manager
Claude Bryan said a scan showed a tear to the left quadriceps muscle.
"The initial ultrasound
scan revealed a tear," he said. He further added that the prognosis gave
"approximately eight weeks to full recovery."
"She will be seeing a
specialist within 24 hours for continued treatment and therapy," Bryan
said, adding that it was too early to determine if she will miss the
remainder of the season.
Campbell, who was
favoured to win the 100m at National Championships, scheduled for June
23, 24 and 25, has the best 100m time –– 10.99 in the world this season.
In her final year at
Barton County College, Campbell, the Commonwealth Games 200m silver
medallist, suffered with a series of injuries. She, however, recovered
fully on her arrival at Arkansas and went on to win the Olympic 200m
title in 2004.
