Griffiths wins in Lille and Williams in Italy

Dean Griffiths beat national champion Kemel Thompson in the men's 400m hurdles at Friday's (June 9) Lille Metropole Meeting in Lille, France.

Griffiths stopped the clock in 48.81 seconds for the win. Thompson, bronze medallist from the Commonwealth Games, finished second in 48.86. Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships gold medallist Gregory Little, finished fourth in 49.81.

Commonwealth Games champion Sheri-Ann Brooks was beaten into second place in the women's 100m. Brooks was timed in 11.37 seconds behind United States' Lolo Jones ( 11.36). Brooks returned to secure third in the 200m, crossing the line in 23.09. Kim Gevaert (22.84) beat LaVerne Jones of US Virgin Islands (22.92 ).

Quarter-miler Sanjay Arye finished fifth in the men's 400m in 45.79 seconds. Gary Kikaya of Democratic Republic of Congo (44.83) won the event ahead of Alleyne Francique of Grenada ( 45.16).

On Tuesday, (June 5) National 400m champion Shericka Williams was Jamaica's lone winner at the Italian Primo Nebiolo Memorial, an EAA Premium Meeting, which is a part of the IAAF World Athletics Tour Qualifier.

Williams' victory came in the 200m when she outclassed her rivals to win in 23.08 seconds. Bahamian Christine Amertil (23.22) was second.

World Championships 100m silver medallist Michael Frater ran 10.28 to finish second overall in the 100m event. United States' Marquis Davis ( 10.27) had the fastest time.

In the men's 400m hurdles, Griffiths (49.75) and Little (49.99) finished third and fourth respectively. American Bershawn Jackson won the event in 48.73 seconds ahead of Italian Gianni Carabelli (49.59).

Kaliese Spencer was also third in the women's 400m hurdles. She crossed the line in 56.96 seconds behind Evgenija Isakova Anna of Russia (55.38) and Anna Jesien of Poland (55.99).
