Gateshead Meet ... Lots of Jamaicans down to run... Another Campbell,
Simpson clash Olympic
champion Veronica Campbell and Commonwealth Games champion Sherone
Simpson will renew their rivalry in the women's 200m at Sunday's IAAF
British Grand Prix in Gateshead.
The clash between the
two Jamaicans is set to spark huge interest, especially since Simpson's
back-to-
back victories over
Campbell in March and May.
In their initial
clashes, Simpson beat Campbell at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne,
before running a personal best and world leading 22.14 for her second
win at the Jamaica International Invitational on May 6.
Also in the women's 200m
field are fellow Jamaican Peta-Gaye Dowdie, a silver medalist at last
year's CAC Championships, Jamaican-born American Sanya Richards, United
States' Torri Edwards, Kim Gevaert of Belgium and Stephanie Durst of
USA.
However, most eyes will
be on joint 100m record holder Asafa Powell who will line-up in the
men's 100m against World Championships silver medalist and training
partners Michael Frater and Ainsley Waugh.
The Jamaican trio will
face Ghana's Aziz Zakari, who finished second behind Powell in his world
record run last June, Great Britain's Mark Lewis-Francis and American
Coby Miller.
In the men's 400m,
former national champion Michael Blackwood faces, among others, Alleyne
Francique of Grenada, Robert Tobin of Great Britain and Clinton Hill,
the second fastest Australian at 45.06.
National record holder
Maurice Wignall carries Jamaica's flag in the men's 110m hurdles against
United States' Bobby Hughes. Both have season best times of 13.26
seconds. Latvia's Stanislav Olijars and American Dominic Arnold are also
a part of the field.
Aleen Bailey, a member
of Jamaica's Olympic gold medal relay team in Athens, will face American
Torri Edwards, Bahamian Chandra Stirrup, Zhanna Block, and Angela
Williams of USA.
Former national champion
and two-time World Championships silver medalist Lorraine Fenton and
reining national champion Shericka Williams, are down to face Olympic
and world champion Tonique Williams-Darling and her Bahamian teammate
Christine Amertil in the women's 400m.
Allison Beckford,
Michelle Burger, along with Carifta Games 400m
silver medalist Kaleise Spencer, face Natasha Davers of Great Britain.
