Gutzmore, Martin finish in top 10 at Tobago Half Marathon
Areita Martin

Jamaica's Commonwealth Games representatives Andrew Gutzmore and Areita Martin finished in the top 10 of their respective sections at last weekend's Tobago Half Marathon.

Gutzmore returned one hour, 13 minutes and 10 seconds to finished 10th in the male category while last year's winner Martin finished sixth in one hour, 42 minutes and 16 seconds.

St. Lucian Sethenrius Joseph (1:06.46) won the men's section, ahead of Trinidad & Tobago's pair of Curtis Cox (1:07.11) and Richard Jones (1:11.10). Trinidad & Tobago's Cyrelene Nero won the female event in one hour and 32 minutes.

Gutzmore was a little disappointed with his performance. "I never really expected that (performance). I was expecting to run in the region of 1:11," he said.

He, however, believes the lack of proper treatment contributed to their performance. "There was only water on the course …… they did not have any replacement fluid and that was a factor," he explained.

According to Gutzmore, who along with Martin represented Jamaica at the World Half Marathon Championships last year, said "even ( Pamenous) Ballentine complained about it".

Gutzmore said the Trinidadians were helped. "There were persons riding on bicycles and giving their people replacement fluid," he added.

Jamaica's 'King of the Road', Wainard Talbert, dropped out after 8k in the race while St. Vincent & The Grenadines' Ballentine, the Caribbean top long distance runner, finished fifth in 1: 11.50.

After leading up to the 8K mark, Talbert suffered cramps and dropped out. "When I reached about 7.5k to 8k I felt cramps," Talbert explained.

"The pace wasn't too hot, because everybody was watching me.

I took over the lead after the first 1k, and even going up to 8k, "I was all alone," said Talbert who heads off to Barbados for a 10k next week.
