JAAA Day 5 REPORT
Once again the Jamaican athletes have
made fans proud as they added two more medals to the Jamaican medal
tally on the 5th day of the 11th IAAF World Championships. At the end of
day five Jamaica has one gold medal and three bronze medals making them
ninth in the medal tally. Deloreen Ennis-London admitted to wanting to
win a gold medal but was grateful for her bronze medal while running a
personal record time of 12:50. Jamaica’s other bronze medalist of the
evening, Novlene Williams was very emotional after her race as she was
edged out on the finish line after leading for almost 398 metres. For
the first time at a major championship, Jamaica has qualified three men
for the final of the men’s 200 metres.

Long Jump Men – Qualifying Round
James Beckford had the second best jump
in the qualifying round of the men’s Long Jump as he moves on to the
final round to be held on Thursday.
110 Hurdles Men – Heats
In a season best time of 13.47, Maurice
Wignall placed third in his heat, qualifying for the semi-final round of
the 110m Hurdles.
Triple Jump
Defending Champion, Trecia Smith, was
not able to qualify for the final of the triple jump as her lone jump of
13.47m was only good enough for 13th place in her group.
200m Women – Round 2
Veronica Campbell and Aleen Bailey
easily qualified for the semi-final round of the women’s 200m. Aleen ran
a season’s best time of 22.60 in winning her heat.
100m Hurdles Women – Final
Delloreen Ennis-London won her second
World Championship medal when she placed third in the finals of the 100m
hurdles in a personal best time of 12.50. Vonette Dixon also produced a
personal best time of 12.64 finishing seventh in the in the final.
400m Men – Semi-final
Ricardo Chambers and Michael Blackwood
were unsuccessful in their bid to make it to the men’s 400m final,
placing fifth and eighth respectively in their semi-final heats. Sanjay
Ayre stopped half way through his semi-final heat which he stated was
the result of a cramp.
400m Women – Final
In her first individual final at the
World Championships, Novlene Williams was able to win a bronze medal in
the women’s 400m in a time of 49.66 which equaled the personal best time
she ran in the semi-final round.
200m Men – Semi-final
Marvin Anderson, once again ran a
personal best time of 20.06 as along with, Usain Bolt and Christopher
Williams they all qualified for the final of the men’s 200m to be run on
Thursday August 30, 2007.
