JAAA Day 1 REPORT
Jamaica had a successful opening day at
the 11th IAAF World Championships with 8 out of 10 competitors advancing
to the next round of their respective events. Athletes reported that the
training camp in Totorri was beneficial and were in high spirits moving
in to the start of competition on Saturday.
3000m Steeplechase Women
Running at 11:00 a.m. in the morning
with an average temperature of 34 degrees Celsius, Madrea Hyman placed
6th in her heat to qualify for the finals of the Women’s 3000m
Steeplechase. Korene Hinds who placed 5th in her heat did not qualify
for the finals.
Shot Put Men
Dorian Scott qualified for the final
round of the Shot Put where he placed 11th.
100m Men
Clement Campbell and Nesta Carter both
finished fourth in their respective second round heats, qualifying for
the semi-final round of the men’s 100m. Asafa Powell won his second
round heat comfortably going into the semi-finals with the fastest
qualifying time of 10.01.
800m Women
Jamaica’s lone entrant in the Women’s
800m, Kenia Sinclair, looked good in qualifying for the semi-final
round.
400m Hurdles Men
Jamaica had three competitors in the
first round of the men’s 400m Hurdles. Danny McFarlane easily qualified
for the semi-final when he won his heat with the third fastest time
going into the semi-finals. Isa Philllips also qualified for the
semi-final round finishing fourth in his first round heat. Markino
Buckley did not finish his first round heat, stopping half way through
the race. He later explained that he had pain in the quad of his trail
leg.
