JAAA Day 2 REPORT
Jamaica's Asafa Powell won the bronze
medal in the final of the men's 100m, the first medal of the
championships for Jamaica. Powell admitted his disappointment in not
winning the gold for Jamaica stating that he panicked towards the end of
the race. Hope for a 100m gold medal for Jamaica now lies with the
ladies, as all three Jamaicans have qualified for the semi-final round.
All three ladies in the 400m have also qualified for their semi-final
round.
400m Women
Jamaica's three competitors in the
women's 400m, Novlene Williams, Shericka Williams and Shereefa Lloyd all
qualified for the semi-final round in the women's 400m.
100m Women
Veronica Campbell had the fastest time
(11.08) in the quarter final round, easily qualifying for the
semi-final. Joining her in the semi-final round will be teammates Kerron
Stewart and Sherri-Ann Brooks who both finished second in their
respective quarter final races.
800m Women
In the semi-final round of the women's
800m Kenia Sinclair finished 6th in her heat in a time of 2:00.25. She
would have needed to place in the top two in her heat to qualify for the
finals or failing that to have run better than 1:58.41 to make the
finals.
400m Hurdles Men
Danny McFarlane was the only Jamaican
to qualify for the final of the men's 400m hurdles as Isa Phillips could
only manage 5th place in his semi-final race. Danny's time of 48.32 for
third place in his semi-final race is his best for the 2007 season.
Jamaica looks forward to Day 3 when the
women will take the stage. In the morning session the hurdlers are
taking the morning heat into consideration and are hoping to be able to
do just enough to qualify comfortably.
