Campbell-Brown repeats, Walker breaks national 400mH record

Veronica Campbell-Brown

BEIJING - Veronica Campbell-Brown repeated her Athens 200m success while Melaine Walker won her first Olympic title.

Shericka Williams, in the women’s 40m, won silver, in an impressive display.

Campbell-Brown's comfortable victory means Jamaica have won all four sprints. Usain Bolt had won the men’s 100m and 200m, both in world record times.

The Jamaican, who won 100m gold and 200m silver at last year's world championships in Osaka, clocked a personal best of 21.74 seconds to finish ahead of American Allyson Felix (21.93sec).

Jamaican Kerron Stewart picked up her second medal here after pipping American Muna Lee at the line in 22.00sec for bronze, following up her silver-medal showing in the 100m.

Campbell-Brown was over happy with her performance. "I am very happy," she said.

"It's great to come out and defend my gold medal,” she continued while saying "It's been great to see Jamaica get a clean sweep of the sprints”

Meanwhile, Walker’s victory was as sweet as Campbell-Brown’s. Walker won in 52.64 seconds to beat Sheena Tosta of the United States (53.70) and Tasha Danvers of Britain (53.84).

Walker mark erased the national record of 52.82, which was set by Deon Hemmings-McCatty to win the 1996 Olympic in games record, which Faní Halkiá ran 52.77 to establish the previous mark in Athens.

Walker said it was a dream come true. “I expected it. I dreamed about it a million times”

“I see my race over and over," added Walker, who won World Junior bronze. I could see myself coming over, crossing the finish line,” a smiling Walker said.

In the women’s 400m, Williams improved on her personal best of 50.24 to secure the silver medal in 49.69 seconds. Jamaica’s second entire, Rosemarie White, was seventh in 50.68.

Great British’s Christie Ohuruogu won the event in 49.62.

American Sanya Richards, the overwhelming favourite for the gold, finished a disappointed third in 49.93.

Williams expressed joy at her performance. ”I’m very happy, a season best and personal best...I could not have asked for more”

“My coach told me I always have the potential. I did what my coach told me and it paid off,” Williams added.
