BERLIN 2009
DAY 7 Report - VC TAKES THE SILVER FOR JAMAICA, NOW SECOND ON MEDAL TABLE

Veronica Campbell-Brown takes the Silver for Jamaica

Long Jump Women

Jovanee Jarret competed in the Women’s Long Jump under windy and rainy conditions on the seventh day of competition. Jovanee was able to get in three good jumps, her last of 6.43m being her best. However that jump was not good enough for her to qualify for the finals.

4 x 100 Men

Jamaica qualified comfortably for the finals of the 4 x 100m relay for men. Lerone Clarke, Michael Frater, Steve Mullings and Dwight Thomas, in that order, combined to run the heats of the first relay event of the championships. Clarke was a fair starter but Jamaica made no headway until the baton was taken by Frater who was able to pull Jamaica forward. Frater and Mullings had a good hand-off and Mullings was able to hand the baton to Thomas in second place where Jamaica finished as an automatic qualifier behind Italy. In an earlier heat the USA was disqualified leaving Great Britain with the fastest time (38.11) going into the finals.

200m Women

After a lengthy rain delay three Jamaican women lined up for the finals of the women’s 200m. Veronica Campbell-Brown led the Jamaica trio and got off to an excellent start, coming off the curve a little ahead of the USA’s Alison Felix - on the inside her teammates Anniesha McLaughlin and Simone Facey were holding their own. Although Campbell-Brown made a great effort running 22.35, she was passed on the homestretch by a fast finishing Alison Felix who won the event in 22.02. Anniesha McLaughlin (22.62)and Simone Facey (22.80) did well in finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

At the end of Day Seven of competition Jamaica is in second place in the medal table with 10 medals (5 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze) behind the USA which has 16 medals. Jamaica is third in the Placing Table with 113 points behind first place USA (173 points) and second place Russia (118 points).
