TRACK & FIELD STARS TOP NATIONAL AWARDS, ONCE MORE
More tributes for Asafa, Sherone, as Sandie receives her thanks
by Laurie Foster
February 2, 2007

The nation’s, undisputedly, most successful sustained its centre stage tradition, as the trail-blazing broadcast group, RJR, through its Sports Foundation, celebrated their second staging of association with the Annual National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards, by doing that which an ever lengthening line of those who seek to recognize and reward brilliance and quality in the sporting arena, are doing. The 2006 Athlete of the Year and world 100m record holder, Asafa Powell and female nominee on the distaff side, Sherone Simpson, both the acknowledged fastest in their category, sprinted away with the top prizes.

So outstandingly, the top awardees had ‘’strut their stuff’’ on the international stage, the exercise to select them from the nominees, must have been ‘’a leisure stroll’’, providing little debate, not even dialogue, being required. From the named slate, previously published and representing a cross section of the sports that we play, 2003 premier lady, Brigitte Foster-Hylton, for her sprint hurdles prowess, further ignited by 2006 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup, was declared the runner-up in the female section. Cricketer, Chris Gayle was, similarly, rewarded in the male section, his explosive batting, producing three centuries and Man of the Tournament Award at the ICC Championships Trophy, clinching it for him.

It was the 46th edition of an event commissioned and run by the Carreras Sports Foundation, the first winners being table tennis sensation/prodigy, Joy Foster and boxing champion, Bunny Grant who was present on the night. The Guests of Honour included the Governor General, Professor Kenneth Hall accompanied by the First Lady, Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller and her consort, Errald, as well as, the Guest Speaker for the event, The Right Honourable Dr. Keith Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada.

The Lyndhurst Road based people earned much plaudits by recognizing the unparalleled and untainted service of courage, class and character gifted to the country by the retiring Sandie Richards, the 1998 Queen.

There were Sports Category Awards presented to the Foundation’s selectees of the top performer in the various disciplines and Certificates of Merit for chosen administrators, officials, sports health care givers, sponsor/mentors and, most notably, for veteran journalist, Courtney Sergeant, an unquestionably distinguished member of the host group. Special Awards, in toto, went to the sport of track and field (no bets taken due odds, unfavorable to the bookies). The recipients were three relay teams who amassed two gold and a bronze at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, early in the year under review.

Amidst all this ‘’Recognition of Sporting Excellence’’, to which invitees were summoned by a most classy invitation, close akin to a trophy of some sort, there were some glaring omissions, let-downs, even. But, indulgence is craved to allow that situation to be showcased on another forum. Keep trying RJR, the tunnel may be dark, just ‘’light a candle’’ and provide the requisite illumination to see your way or should one say ‘’The Nation’s Way’’?.
