James
was an outstanding junior long and triple jumper, and he is still 6th on
the junior all-time list for the latter event, and contested both events
at the 1995 World Championships, his first time competing for Jamaica.
However, by the age of 21, James started to become concerned about the
potential for injury in the triple jump and concentrated on the long
jump for the 1996 Olympic Games. In Atlanta, James became the first
Jamaican to get an Olympic medal in a field event when he finished
second behind the legendary Carl Lewis, which he still ranks as his
greatest achievement.
"When I was a young boy in Jamaica, I
can recall watching the 1984 Olympic Games and seeing Carl win the long
jump. I told my mom that one day I am going to be there," he said
recently.
Athletics has always been James first
love but he was a good gymnast in his school days and his talent
stretches beyond sport. “I used to play the drums in my father's
Christian band when I was 12 years old. I enjoy going to the movies,
dancing, playing and listening to music."
His inspiration has always been his
mother, and her influence remains strong even today, years after her
death. Among the many things James says she gave him, was confidence
which extends to an analysis of his opponents. “The will to succeed and
the people in your life who have faith in you really inspire me to work
hard for what I love to do”.
Currently, James lives and trains in
Erfurt, Germany and is coached by Vera Riechel. After track & field
James would like to go into athletic training as well as managing.
